Protecting the Rights of Importers and Exporters: PART ONE On 9/30/2020 the premier trade publication International Trade Today ("ITT") published an article referencing a blog by Kenneth Rapoza, an "industry analyst" at the Coalition for a Prosperous America in which he referred to attorneys seeking to protect the rights of importers to potential refunds of section 301 duties paid on imported Chinese goods under lists 3 and 4A as "ambulance chasers." Here is a copy of the letter I sent to Tim Warren, Managing Editor of ITT: Tim— In a free speech nation, people can and may say things that one might disagree with, or even find offensive. Civil discourse avoids ad hominem attacks. Your reporting of the comments of Kenneth Rapoza on behalf of the Coalition for a Prosperous America falls into the first two categories and failed to avoid an ad hominem slur on the legal profession. By way of elucidation for Mr. Rapoza and for the sake of others who might concur with his slur on the legal profession, here’s a response to his comment. Of course he has a bias. He is not simply the “journalist with more than 20 years’ experience” that he claims in his biography on the CPA web site. He is an “industry analyst” for an organization with a particular point of view for which he advocates...
