Aviation and Wireless Groups Holding Technical Discussions on Upper C Band
Wireless and aviation groups are working together to look at how the upper C band can be safely reallocated for full-power licensed use, officials from the Aerospace Industries Association, Airlines for America and CTIA told the FCC in a filing posted Friday. Questions about the implications for radio altimeters, which use adjacent spectrum, surfaced ahead of FCC approval of a notice of inquiry on the band (see 2502120046).

The groups said they're holding “regular technical exchanges” between aviation and wireless experts “to define a consensus analytical framework to evaluate potential coexistence parameters between mobile operations in spectrum above 3.98 GHz and altimeters operating in the 4.2-4.4 GHz band.” The discussions have highlighted other issues that must be considered as well, “including required regulatory procedures, economic impacts and operational requirements for both industries,” said the filing in docket 25-59. They called for "similar technical and policy coordination among the FCC, NTIA, and FAA to ensure a mutually beneficial and workable path forward."
