OFAC Sanctions Mexican Cartel Officials, Associate
The Office of Foreign Assets Control this week sanctioned three senior members and one associate of the Mexico-based Cartel del Noreste, which it called one of the "most violent drug trafficking organizations" in the country and which the U.S. labeled a Foreign Terrorist Organization in February (see 2502190011).

The designations target Abdon Federico Rodriguez Garcia, the group's second-in-command, and Antonio Romero Sanchez, another high-ranking cartel member. OFAC said they have been linked to drug trafficking, money laundering, extortion and violence.
The agency also sanctioned Francisco Daniel Esqueda Nieto, also known as Franky Esqueda, who took over the cartels' "tactical operations" in Nuevo Laredo after the arrest earlier this year of cartel leader Ricardo Gonzalez Sauceda, whom OFAC sanctioned previously (see 2505210019).
