House Bill Would Repeal Syria Sanctions Law
Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, led a bill June 12 that would repeal a 2019 law that sanctioned Syria's Bashar al-Assad regime for war crimes.

Following the fall of the Assad regime in December, the Caeser Syria Civilian Protection Act should no longer remain in place, Wilson said. Although the State Department last month waived sanctions under the law for 180 days (see 2505230073), permanently sidelining the measure would provide long-term certainty to those who wish to invest in rebuilding Syria, the lawmaker said.
The bill, which has seven Democratic and Republican co-sponsors, was referred to the House Foreign Affairs, Judiciary and Financial Services committees.
