New Sanctions Bill Would Target West Bank Violence

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., introduced a bill April 28 that would codify former President Joe Biden’s February 2024 executive order allowing the U.S. to sanction those who undermine peace, security and stability in the West Bank.

President Donald Trump revoked the order in January (see 2501210023), prompting the Office of Foreign Assets Control to remove sanctions from all people and entities designated under Biden's action (see 2501240011). Nadler said the sanctions authority needs to be restored and codified into law because Israeli settler violence against Palestinians is reportedly rising.

The West Bank Violence Prevention Act, which is co-sponsored by Reps. Adam Smith, D-Wash., and Jim Himes, D-Conn., was referred to the House Foreign Affairs and Judiciary committees. Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt., and Rep. Summer Lee, D-Pa., introduced a similar bill near the end of the last Congress (see 2412120011).
