Lawmaker Calls for Sanctioning Azerbaijani Leaders
Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., said April 29 that Azerbaijani officials, including President Ilham Aliyev, should face sanctions for recent human rights abuses, such as a growing number of political prisoners.

“Let’s hope that the new [Trump] administration will pick up this ball,” Smith said while chairing a hearing of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission. Smith added that he's drafting a bipartisan bill to address the “worsening situation in Azerbaijan.”
