US Ambassador to UN Nominee Backs Restoring Nuclear Sanctions on Iran
Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., President Donald Trump’s choice for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said Jan. 21 that she would favor reimposing sanctions on Iran for violating its nuclear weapons-related obligations.

During her confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Stefanik testified that she would work with the White House, the State Department and U.S. allies to trigger the snapback of U.N. sanctions on Iran. “Pushing back on Iran is a top priority,” she said. She noted that U.S. allies are reportedly already considering such sanctions as well (see 2411060041).
Stefanik made her comments in response to Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who said Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed similar views in written testimony to the committee for his own recent confirmation hearing.
