Key House Democrat Weighs Vote on ICC Sanctions Bill

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said Jan. 8 that he is considering how he will vote on a bill to sanction International Criminal Court (ICC) officials for issuing arrest warrants for Israeli officials (see 2501060025).

The House plans to take up the legislation Jan. 9. Jeffries noted to reporters that he joined a majority of House Democrats in voting against a similar bill last year (see 2406050037). The earlier bill cleared the Republican-led House but failed to advance in the Senate.

Also on Jan. 8, new Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said he intends to hold a vote "soon" on ICC sanctions legislation. "The ICC’s rogue actions only enable the terrorists who seek to wipe Israel off the map -- and they cannot be allowed to stand unchecked," Thune said in a Senate floor speech.
