House of Representatives Votes to Fund the Government Through Mid-March

The House of Representatives voted 366-34 to fund the government through mid-March, as the Republican majority dropped a debt ceiling provision it tried to pair with the slimmed down spending bill on Dec. 19.

The bill could not have passed without Democratic support -- 170 Republicans voted to keep the government open, plus 196 Democrats. No Democrats voted against the bill, despite the fact that it had been slimmed down precisely to cut out what President-elect Donald Trump called "DEMOCRAT GIVEAWAYS."

Some of the provisions that were excised from the bill this week were a renewal of the Haitian trade preferences program and restrictions on outbound investment in China.

The Senate is expected to also pass the bill, avoiding a government shutdown just before Christmas.
