BIS recently created the role as part of a restructuring of its export administration offices. Thea Kendler, assistant secretary for export administration, said at the annual BIS conference in March that the deputy assistant secretary for technology security will oversee work on emerging and foundational technology export controls, foreign technology analysis and research to assess the effectiveness of BIS export controls.

A BIS spokesperson declined to comment about whether the agency has filled that position.
