TransTAC Aiming for 2020 Wassenaar Proposals on Compressors, Supersonic Engines, Space-Related Tech
The Transportation and Related Equipment Technical Advisory Committee has worked with the Commerce and Defense departments on several Wassenaar Arrangement proposals, some of which are nearly ready for interagency review and others that are scheduled for proposal at Wassenaar next year. The proposals involve space-related technologies, compressors, industrial gas turbines and commercial supersonic engines, said Ari Novis, chair of the committee and director of international trade compliance for Pratt & Whitney.

The proposals include one for gas turbine compressor technology, Novis said during the committee’s Nov. 13 meeting. The committee formed a gas turbine compressor technology working group, which has had a “number of meetings” to determine whether there is a need for multilateral control, Novis said. “That's pretty far along,” he said. “I’m pretty comfortable we’re going to have something submitted for that hopefully next year.”
Novis also said there is a “renewed interest” in commercial supersonic engines, and the committee is getting close to circulating a Wassenaar proposal for interagency review of industrial gas turbine technologies. The committee hopes to have 2020 proposals for both supersonic engines and industrial gas turbines, Novis said. The committee has also “provided support” to Commerce and the Defense Department “on several space-related Wassenaar proposals,” Novis said, but did not discuss specifics in the meeting’s public session.
