US Has Had 'Ton of Activity' in Japan-South Korea Trade Dispute, State Department Official Says
The U.S. has been heavily involved in finding a solution to the Japan-South Korea trade dispute (see 1909260019), a senior State Department official said Sept. 26, but “it’s going to take some time.”

“I can guarantee you there’s been a ton of activity,” the official told reporters at the United Nations General Assembly. “We encouraged both sides to stop focusing on the past and start working back toward the future.”
The U.S. will continue helping both countries find a solution even though the administration has not discussed it much publicly, the official said. “Let’s not assume disinterest just due to lack of visibility,” the official said. “We’re clearly interested.”
But a solution may not be immediate. The State Department is “working very hard to do whatever we can,” the official said, but “until we get a decision in both capitals to resolve this, it’s going to take time.”
