House Majority Leader Says He Will Ask His Chamber to Reject End of Rusal Sanctions
House Majority Leader Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., will be introducing a resolution that would disapprove of the Trump administration's decision to lift sanctions on Russian aluminum producer Rusal and related companies (see 1812270035), which is due to take effect Jan. 18. In order to prevent the action, the Senate and the House must both disapprove of the sanctions' lifting. The Senate voted Jan. 15 to approve a motion to proceed to a resolution on disapproval. However, that is not the final word in the Senate.

Hoyer, in response to a question from International Trade Today, said he would ask Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to delay the lifting of sanctions until Feb. 28, because he wants to give the Financial Services and Foreign Affairs committees time to review the deal, possibly hold hearings and make recommendations. "The issue is whether as a result of introducing it, we can act after the 17th to conclude the sanctions or to retreat from the sanctions being lifted," Hoyer said Jan. 15. The sanctions have been in abeyance since they were first levied in April.
