CPSC Issues Safety Standard for Bassinets and Cradles

The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued its safety standard for bassinets and cradles, in a final rule set for publication in the Oct. 23 Federal Register. The rule incorporates the voluntary industry standard for bassinets and cradles, ASTM F2194-13, with additions and changes that CPSC says will “strengthen the ASTM standard, to further reduce the risk of injury.” The new standard is effective April 23, 2014, except for provisions on removable bassinet beds that take effect April 23, 2015. CPSC said the later effective date for that product is necessary because some manufacturers will need to redesign, test new prototypes, and retool their production to meet the new removable bassinet bed requirements.
