Washington Trade Daily reports that international litigation in the US-Canada softwood lumber dispute continued on June 1, 2005 with three decisions in three separate cases, two involving the World Trade Organization (WTO) and one involving a NAFTA panel. 2. CBP Chicago Steel Identification, Classification, and Trade Law Seminar
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the port of Chicago has issued a Pipeline announcing a Steel Identification, Classification, and Trade Law Seminar on July 12-14, 2005 in Chicago, IL. The Pipeline states that the seminar is limited to 40 participants and anyone interested in attending this seminar must register (see Pipeline for details). 3. FSIS Meeting for Upcoming Codex Alimentarius Commission Session
The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced that it was scheduled to hold a public meeting on June 9, 2005 to provide information and receive public comments on agenda items and draft U.S. positions that will be discussed at the 28th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) to be held in Rome, Italy on July 4-9, 2005. 4. PHMSA Final Rule Amends HMR to Reduce Regulatory Burdens
The Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA) has issued a final rule, effective August 12, 2005, which amends the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) to reduce the regulatory burdens on industry by incorporating changes based on PHMSA's own initiatives and petitions for rulemaking submitted in accordance with 49 CFR 106.95. 5. Environmental Group Finds SFTA Has Failed to Stop Illegal Timber Imports
Shippers' NewsWire reports that the Environmental Investigation Agency, an environmental protection group, contends that a side agreement to the U.S.-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (SFTA) has done nothing in the past two years to stop illegal Southeast Asian timber imports from passing through Singapore. Shippers' NewsWire explains that the Bush Administration is publicly committed to combating illegal logging, which results in a roughly $1 billion annual loss to the U.S. timber industry due to both devalued domestic sales and lost exports. 6. CPSC Public Hearing on its FY 2007 Agenda and Priorities
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced that it will hold a public hearing on June 21, 2005 to receive views from all interested parties about its agenda and priorities for CPSC attention during fiscal year (FY) 2007, which begins October 1, 2006. 7. Coast Guard Seeks Applications for Membership on Chemical Transportation Advisory Committee
The Coast Guard is seeking applications by October 28, 2005 for appointment to membership on the Chemical Transportation Advisory Committee (CTAC), which provides advice and makes recommendations on matters relating to the safe and secure transportation and handling of hazardous materials in bulk on U.S. flag vessels in U.S. ports and waterways.
