According to a columnist in the Washington Post's business section, the sugar lobby has come out against the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), in a bid to finally get sugar off the negotiating table once and for all, and preserve their tariffs and import quotas that cost Americans at least $1 billon a year in subsidies and artificially high sugar prices. 2. USTR Praises U.S. Textile Group's Support of CAFTA

U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman has issued a statement commending the National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO) for its support of the U.S.-Central American-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). The release notes that the CAFTA region is the third-largest world market for U.S. textile fabrics and yarn, and garments made in the region would be duty-free and quota-free under the agreement only if they use U.S. fabric and yarn. 3. FMC Discontinues Proceeding on the Impact of Paperwork Elimination and Electronic Signatures

The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) has issued an order discontinuing its proceeding (D/N 01-08) on the impact of the Government Paperwork Elimination Act and the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act on all sectors of the U.S. ocean shipping industry. 4. President's Export Council to Hold Open Meeting
