U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has issued a press release stating that it made 6,500 seizures of merchandise in violation of intellectual property rights (IPR) laws in Fiscal Year (FY) 2003, an increase of about 700 seizures over FY 2002, with the value of FY 2003 IPR seizures amounting to $94 million.

1. CBP Announces IPR Seizure Data for FY 2003
In its press release, CBP provides a breakdown of counterfeit commodities seized in FY 2003 (e.g., cigarettes with a domestic value of $41.7 million; wearing apparel valued at $14 million; and handbags, wallets, and backpacks valued at $11.5 million). 2. CBP Makes More than 1.7 Million Interceptions of Prohibited Agricultural Items in FY 2003
CBP has issued a press release stating that CBP agricultural inspectors and specially trained canines made 1,739,296 interceptions of prohibited plant material, meat/poultry, and animal by-products in FY 2003, with more than 69,000 quarantine-significant pest interceptions.
